A Leadership Movement Is Afoot!

Look around. Things are changing in the Kalamazoo area. For the better. People are walking and running. In twos and threes. In small groups. In large groups. School kids are walking and running. On the playground. On trails. In the streets. Even if you don’t see it, it’s there. We have the largest Girls on the Run program in the state of Michigan and the seventh largest in the country. We have the largest running club in Michigan — by a factor of two. We have the largest “run camp” in America.

It didn’t “just happen.” A few adults stepped forward. And then a few more. And then some children stepped forward. Children are leaders, too, you know.

More and more Kalamazoo area residents, with a little something nagging inside them that they could do more, took up a leadership challenge. And now there’s room for lots more.

Leadership is not a nebulous, distant concept or something “possessed” by powerful people, but a daily, joyful experience of getting the most our of ourselves by bringing out the best in others.

Yes, in a sense, the country is “shut down,” but we’re a nation of communities, and this community is “on the move.” Yes, in a sense, we’ve entered a new age of healthcare, but the age-old reality is that the daily habits of individuals and families have more control of healthcare than any other factor.

Leadership is our secret weapon in this community because we know we demonstrate it on a daily basis, at home, in school, at work, at play. We can start something on our own or we can plug in to something meaningful.
